  1. Hello everyone!

Another half a year has rolled by, and Daylight Saving Time with it. This, of course, means confusion and mayhem will rule for a couple days until everyone gets used to the new event times! ?

So let's try to mitigate this confusion and take a look at what's happening with the clocks in the upcoming time zone changes:

    Summary

For the countries that observe Daylight Saving Time, there are two major dates when this change occurs - the last Sunday of October, commonly used in Europe & Africa, and the first Sunday in November, used more commonly in the Americas.

However, note that while we change time zones, the in-game events do not. They're bound to a time that doesn't change, so relative to them, our event times shift to be one hour earlier.

The main change is that the official "Community Time" - the time we write down on static schedules, such as channel names, MOTDs, Discord, etc., will be changing from CEST [UTC+2] to CET [UTC+1]. This change will be happening on Sunday, the 28th of October.

    • 28th of October: clocks change in Europe & Africa, OC's written times change from CEST [UTC+2] to CET [UTC+1].
    • 4th of November: clocks change in America

Some countries have their own individual changes, while others, like Russia, do not shift their time zones at all. You can find more information on the Wikipedia entry about Daylight Saving Time by country.

Our calendar is dynamic, so events listed there will be in the right times, although there might be a short disturbance around the 28th as all events are adjusted. But from then onwards, the times should be correct & dynamically displayed for the area you are connecting from.

What does this mean in practice?

Alright, let's look at a practical example. For this example, we will be using the following time zones - UTCBST/GMT (Britain), CEST/CET (Central Europe), EDT/EST (New York - Eastern (US) Time), and MSK (Moscow - Western Russia).

    UP TO OCTOBER 28th
Universal Britain Central Europe Moscow New York
    UTC BST [UTC+1] CEST [UTC+2] MSK [UTC+3] EDT [UTC-4]
    19:30 20:30 21:30 22:30 15:30
    OCTOBER 28th
Universal Britain Central Europe Moscow New York
    UTC GMT [UTC+0] CET [UTC+1] MSK [UTC+3] EDT [UTC-4]
    19:30 19:30 20:30 22:30 15:30
    NOVEMBER 4th
Universal Britain Central Europe Moscow New York
    UTC GMT [UTC+0] CET [UTC+1] MSK [UTC+3] EST [UTC-5]
    19:30 19:30 20:30 22:30 14:30

The event featured is Triple Trouble, normally happening at 21:30 CEST, that's 19:30 UTC. After the time zone change on October 28th, Triple Trouble will be relatively one hour earlier for Britain, Europe, and other countries changing time zones at that date, but will remain the same for areas which do not, such as Russia and the United States.

Then, on November 4th, the States and some other countries will change time zones as well, meaning Triple Trouble will be happening one hour earlier for them as well.

Some Extra Math for Our American Friends

During the week from October 28th to November 4th, NA members must account for 1 hour less in the time difference from OC time, but after the week is over, the time difference will again be the same, but all events will be happening one hour earlier.

For example, right now, to calculate any time difference, NA members from EDT can simply subtract 6 from any event time. TT at 9:30 PM becomes 3:30 PM. During the week of mayhem, the difference is 5 hours - TT at 8:30 PM is still 3:30 PM. Then, from November 4th onward, it's 6 hours again - 8:30 PM becomes 2:30 PM.

  3. Year 1266-1306: Empress Katarina of the Illyrian Empire

    KatarinaProfile.gif

Image: Katarina's profile through her years as queen.

Katarina’s rule was not as long as her mother’s, but was definitely not unimpactful. She not only added the Crown of Italy under Illyrian rule, but also reclaimed the historical territories of Italy for the crown once in her control.

By skillfully negotiating a marriage between the Aztec Emperor’s daughter and her son, she secured peace between the two realms until her son’s death, by which point the Aztec Empire was weakened by its overextensions.

1291 began a series of reforms, founding the Illyrian Empire. The three crowns of Illyria, Croatia, and Italy together with the Kingdom of Jerusalem, the proverbial crown jewel of the empire, form the newly founded Illyrian Empire. Katarina’s reforms also moved the realm into Imperial administration, and local civil wars became forbidden, and she introduced Viceroyalties to the realm, allowing her to convert hereditary Duchies to Viceroyalties, which are ran in the name of the Empress by her vassals, but not inherited by their children.

After founding the Empire, Katarina mostly looked inwards, and worked on improving the economy and infrastructure of her realm, although she did halt the advances of the Aztec in mainland Europe by liberating Aquitaine from their grasp and returning it to Catholic rule. She spent most of her late reign converting vassal Duchies to Viceroyal positions.

    KatarinaFamily.png

Image: Family tree showing Katarina's family.

Katarina had four children, but just like with her mother, only two of them managed to outlive her. They're marked in bold, and her grand-children by her daughter Natalija, which includes her heir, are noted as well.

    1. 15.1.1245 - Natalija [heir apparent until her death in 3.6.1286]
      1. 16.1.1273 - Katarina [heir]
      2. 16.11.1274 - Sofija
      3. 16.11.1279 - Natalija
    2. 15.1.1245 - Nejc [died 17.1.1283]
    3. 15.2.1250 - Katja
    4. 15.9.1251 - Vid (9.1.1301 - Becomes Prince Mayor Vid II of Venice)

Her full title at the time of her death was:

Empress Katarina of the Illyrian Empire, Queen of Illyria, Italy, Croatia and Jerusalem, Duchess of Carinthia and Friuli, Countess of Krain, Aquileia, Istria, Kärnten, Veglia, Treviso, Verona, Padua, Steiermark, Rome, Protector of Jerusalem and Baroness of Görz, Maga and First-Among-Equals of the Hermetic Society.

    KatarinaDeathScreen.png

    Image: Katarina's death screen.

Katarina completed her family's recent goals of expanding into Italy, and her ambition drove the family to new heights, emerging as one of the most powerful families in the known world.

She died on 15.8.1306, and was succeeded by her granddaughter Katarina, who inherited all of her titles.

    She ruled for 40 years.

Katarina I left many unfinished plans, including the plan to expunge the Byzantine Empire from the Apennine Peninsula, and to install her son-in-law as the Emperor of the Byzantine Empire, with hopes that the title would pass down to her granddaughter. Perhaps Katarina II will be able to secure those goals.

During her reign, the size of her realm increased from 254 to 348 holdings, and she went from 54 to 70 direct vassals.

She was involved in 18 wars, and never lost a single one. She died during the Illyrian-Byzantine Great Conquest of Sicily.

Lelling note: I'm not sure about this layout with the hidden fields, so I'll continue to experiment. Maybe by the time the game is over, we'll see what's best ?

  5. Year 1201-1266: Queen Natalija of Illyria

    NatalijaPortrait.gif

Image: Natalija's profile through her years as queen.

Natalija continued the family's tradition of great female rulers, as well as her namesake's longevity, ruling for over six decades, and her reign saw great expansions into the Italian territories, as well as the Middle East. Advances in culture and technology, as well as investments into local development, were a focus of her rule, as were relationships with other rulers.

She also ensured that her husband Unulf was crowned King of Lombardy, reforming the Kingdom into the Kingdom of Italy. She herself was the hand behind several men in positions of power, establishing, among others, distant cousin Lutbert as King of Scotland, brother-in-law Angelbert as Emperor of Hispania and her son-in-law Sa’d as the Sultan / King of the Lubbunid Andalusian Sultanate. She also established an antipope after being excommunicated by Pope Victor IV - her distant cousin Vid, who became Pope Hadrianus II.

Her reign also saw a major political shift as invaders from the West, calling themselves Aztecs, descended upon Europe, conquering Wales and most of the Iberian Peninsula.

Natalija was an efficient and powerful ruler, and her reign was marked as a period of great prosperity and stability across all of Illyria. She was also a reformer, introducing the Absolute Cognatic succession law, making women inherit on the same grounds as men for the first time in history.

Note: Yep, the Aztecs are a thing. It's a much-debated DLC since it's an alternate historical timeline but then again, so's everything else that's been happening ?

    NatalijaFamily.png

Image: Family tree showing Natalija's family.

Natalija had four children, but only two of them managed to outlive her. They're marked in bold.

    1. 24.4.1212 - Katarina [heir]
    2. 24.9.1215 - Peter [heir apparent until his death] - died 1.5.1218
    3. 24.5.1217 - Natalija (Duchess Natalija II of Ivrea and Modena)
    4. 24.11.1219 - Jelka (Queen consort of Andalusia) - died 19.5.1263

Her full title at the time of her death was:

Queen Natalija of Illyria, Croatia and Jerusalem, Duchess of Carinthia and Friuli, Countess of Krain, Aquileia, Istria, Kärnten, Veglia, Mantua, Treviso, Verona, Padua, Steiermark, Maan, Petra, and Protector of Jerusalem, Maga and First-Among-Equals of the Hermetic Society.

    NatalijaDeathScreen.png

    Image: Natalija's death screen.

Natalija furthered her family's advances in Lombardy / Italy, and by establishing her husband as King, managed to already exert an amount of influence over the realm. However, her husband was a rather incompetent ruler, losing territories in the South to the Byzantine Empire, and Natalija herself later vassalized many of his northern territories.

She died on 24.5.1266, and was succeeded by her daughter Katarina, who inherited all of her titles.

She ruled for almost 65 years, dying just five days before her the 65th anniversary of her succession.

Will Katarina be able to conquer the Kingdom of Italy, or will her reign crumble under the new threat of the Aztec invasion from the West, or the perpetually looming Byzantine Empire in the East?

Note: I added a little change - the map now overlays the territory over the map of the world at the time of succession, rather than time of death, and shows the changed map at the end of the animation. Also, for some reason the gif is refusing to animate?? Here's an imgur link.

Lelling note: Hey everyone! Here's another long overdue update! ? I've been super busy with all the OC stuff lately but decided to take some time to power through another ruler, and boy was I not ready for another Duracell Queen.

I made some changes to the layout of the posts - I've now clearly separated the mostly flavor stuff (in the left column) from the technical stuff (right column), so now the left column is very much biographical and focuses on the achievements of the individual ruler, as well as completely arbitrary flavour stuff like their "full title", and the set up for the heir. The right column is focused more on the realm expansion and titles, and I'll see if I can extract some more statistics for future rulers for anyone who likes that kind of thing ? .

  7. Hey everyone!

The next treasure hunt is ready to begin!

    Information:

The treasure is located on the Western half of the map!

The treasure this time around is Thunder's Reach, an unbreakable bow with Infinity and Punch IV, an enchantment so powerful it is impossible to create it by mortal means!

    Treasure.png

The treasure is located in a small alcove somewhere in the world!

    Minor Treasures:

There are also three minor treasures hidden around the world! They are all in the Western part of the world, and can be recognised via the trademark treasure altar shape.

They all hold the same identical treasure inside!

Yeah, I meant along with having the plugin to keep numbers sane. I asked in the context of Lelling saying no specific info was going to be shared. Prevents people wasting resources breeding and allows for proper planning of farms if they know the number at which they'll start losing animals.

The problem with that is that the plugin's functionality isn't "X animals in a pen", it's a more complex series of different limitations, some dealing with specific types of entities while others affecting all entities, each at different scales (and even different ways of calculating what an area / group of animals is), so even if we wanted to, we couldn't just give a straightforward answer, and I can't say something like "the limitation is between 10 to 100 animals depending on density, distance, and variety of entity type".

The settings we have planned are super lenient and are mainly a deterrent for large-scale farming and super cramped (like 3x3) pens, and they should have minimal impact on most of the players' pens we've seen, but there is potentially no maximum amount of creatures a person could have if they know how to position their pens to avoid the plugin's functionality. Meaning if it got properly figured out, we would have to make the limits stricter, and then they actually would affect the everyday regular person who just wants a andful of cows for their regular needs.

I get the resources concern. I think when it comes to using resources for breeding, players should notice when they stop getting new mobs, but I can check with Acorn to see how exactly that functions, because I wouldn't want players to be able to breed hundreds of cows only to log in the next day and find they've been culled down to 20 or something. But I'm pretty sure it doesn't work that way - I think you'd just stop getting new cows. Will make sure.

Hmm, I feel like I should explain some stuffs ?

It runs the check per chunk. This can't be changed, and it means one has to dedicate more space if one wants to have more persistent animals (which kinda makes sense as far as real-life analogy goes). People will often have the maximum allowed number of mobs per chunk because that's the state this mod is trying to enforce.

The mod has a command that straight out tells those limits to the player. It's also trivial to test for them due to how the mod works (it doesn't actively prevent animals from breeding). IMO this should be a publicly accessible information so people don't constantly ask where their animals went. ?

Here's how this is set up on mcpublic (IIRC): upon chunk unload, all except X animals of a given type get removed. To offset for this change and make farming viable again, passive mobs grow up in 10 seconds and drop like 3x the amount of resources they normally do. The approach promoted by the admins is to breed the animals, wait a bit, and kill them for drops. People can still have their free range chickens, they just have to have an actual range. ?

That is not the plugin we are using ?

The functionality of the plugin is easily googled so it's not like people can't go and find out.

However, the specific ranges & numbers are a setting that is specific to the server, and giving out specifics means people could very easily figure out how to get the most mobs in the smallest area without them being culled. Which is not the point of why we're getting the plugin.

  11. Hey everyone! The updates just keep rolling in ?

I'm super happy to finally be able to announce the Package Tracker, a brand new addition to the website that gives everyone a little bit more insight about what exactly's going on with their physical item packages and whether they've been sent or not! You can access it from the Community tab in the navigation menu at the top of any page on the website ^^

In the past, we've had to use private messages or forms on the website to exchange information, and if people wanted an update on their package they'd need to just poke me here on the website. Now, all that information is in one place!

With the package tracker you can see whether your package has been packed, shipped, or whether it needs some kind of input from you - such as selecting a choice of shiny in cases where you can select a prize, or entering an address.

You can also edit your mailing address (or delete it). This is part of the improvements we've been wanting to make that give users more direct control over their information - rather than using our old system of asking for it via forms, which can't be accessed after being submitted. Overall, this should make the whole thing more transparent and smoother!

This also means we can finally send out the batch of prizes from the last two fundraisers, which have been put on hold since we wanted to finish the package tracker before sending them out ^^ Huzzah! All the good things!

P.S.: Despite the name, while it would be cool, the tracker doesn't track the whereabouts of your package while it's en route to you ?. Unfortunately, that's not within our abilities, but in the past, most packages have arrived within 14 days to European locations, and within 30 days everywhere else ?.

I do realize that we had little information about what exactly is planned, the number of animals allowed, the definition of "small space" etc...

Some players are concerned, others don't care. I just decided to speak up and ask ^__^

That we are installing this plugin was so far only mentioned in an offhand comment that was about a completely separate update to our server. In that comment, I also said that we will be making a more concrete announcement about the plugin at a later time. So, there's no need for people to speculate about things we haven't said until an announcement has actually been made. ?

However, we have decided we will not be giving out specific numbers or directly describing the functionality of the plugin. The moment we do so, we risk having to deal with people who will find a way to exploit the understanding of the mechanic and ignore the reason why the plugin has to be implemented in the first place, and then either have to change the restrictions, which affects everyone on the server, or manually deal with each such situation.

What's that thing @Doomsday says? "Live by the spirit, not the letter of the law."

After we get to have spigot: MobLimiter plugin (only leaves a configurable number of mobs per type per chunk on unload), and configure passive mob drops to give more per mob so people aren't as encouraged to breed hundreds of them for basic resources.

Right now you can feel the difference in tick rate when people who have a lot of animals bred log on/off.

(I realize I also have some, it could be avoided if passive mob drops were increased. This isn't aimed at anyone specific, it's just Minecraft performance being derp.)

[4:24 PM] Styxx: Yeah I don't think there's much lag left. We can ask people to be reasonable and not overdo it, but also not have to kill farming since we all need wool, leather, etc..

We certainly hope we are not "killing farming" by simply implementing a plugin which prevents people from grouping up animals into very tiny pens or having hundreds of them. The maximum entity limit is a resource, just like any other resource in the game, and no player is entitled to have more than everyone else. We're simply trying to keep things fair ^^
