  1. Update: I managed to get a claim on the Abbasid Empire (the largest existing empire), and after waiting patiently, they had some internal instability, so I invaded them.

    Dun dun dunnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn :D

However, the succession laws of the Empires are different (in the previously Abbasid Empire, women cannot inherit, and inheritance is Gavelkind rather than Primogeniture), which means when I die, my direct heir may not inherit it, so I must work to change the laws before I die :P

  2. It thought I'd start a thread about everyone's favorite familicide simulator.

People in this game always get up to all sorts of shenanigans (as evidenced by the existence of this reddit) so I thought it'd be nice for people to share their cool / silly stuff.

I've not managed to bug anything crazy yet myself (no pregnant kings here), BUT I was quite proud of one of my daughters in this game and thought I'd share :D

    3HbJV7f.jpg

She was the marshal of her father's empire for most of her life, and by the time he died, so did all of her brothers who were eligible for the crown.

    ktK9YWk.jpg

As Empress, she continued having the highest martial score in the realm, and fought numerous holy wars against the Abbasids and various Indian rulers. While not managing to conquer Jerusalem, she did conquer Sinai and cut off Egypt from the Abbasid Empire, causing an independence war which left both enemies weakened.

She died in the year 1124 at age 70, ruling for relatively short amount of time - only 23 years, during which time she expanded the territories of the realm more than any ruler before her, and twice the amount of her father who ruled for 58 years. 118 years later, her great great grandson managed to fully retake all of Jerusalem from the Abbasids, restoring Israel in 1242.

Oh, also, the son of the guy who restored Israel has a weak claim on the Abbasid Empire, so things are about to get interesting ck2_forumicon.png:D

I'm all for supporting the LGBT community, but don't you think this is a little too extreme, like if you want to do a pride march why don't do it in real life where you know people care, it seems rather stupid to push your agenda on other people in a game.

    What's the agenda we're pushing?

  4. NOTE: You can also show your support for our event on the Reddit thread! ^^

    Hey folks!

As part of Pride Month, I am excited to announce that this year, we will be hosting and organising an in-game pride march on June 26th at 6 PM CEST (that's 4 PM UTC/ server time)!

Here's a copy of the description from the NA post (with times & descriptions adjusted for EU):

    ~

    Citizens of Tyria!

You are invited to join us in celebrating Pride March Tyria this June 26 at 6 PM CEST.

We march primarily to show our support for gender and sexual minority players, some of which have found Guild Wars 2 to be one of a few safe places to simply be themselves and get away from the drama and the politics of the outside world.

Allies and proponents of equality for all are especially welcome to attend as are those who are members of LGBTQIA+ communities!

The march route will be starting in the center of Ebonhawke and proceed until it reaches the steps of Rata Sum. Please refer to included map for specifics:

    CWUiMxs.jpg

As real life comes first we’ll understand if players will only be stopping by for a short section of the approximately two and a half hour tour. Also for those for whom the above-mentioned time is inconvenient, we’ll be glad for those who want to volunteer to lead other groups whenever is most convenient for them as we want this message of support to reach as many as possible regardless of personal time constraints.

    Thank you for your time.

    ~

    When do we meet?

Commanders & organizers will begin gathering at 5 PM CEST, so you should already be able to reach us one hour in advance. You can contact us in-game, or join us on TeamSpeak (ts.theopencommunity.org)

    Where do we meet?

Ebonhawke! If you don't have explored yet, do not worry! You can reach Ebonhawke through a portal in Divinity's Reach, so we will also have a commander showing people the way through DR if needed.

How do we get on the same instance of the map?

We will be using TeamSpeak to taxi people onto the same map via squadjoins. If you don't wish to join us on TeamSpeak, you can whisper one of the people on the contact list below and they'll help you join the correct map in-game.

TeamSpeak address:  ts.theopencommunity.org, no password, no voice requirement, no shenanigans :D

    What do I bring?

You don't have to bring anything! But, party boxes, kites, transformations, fireworks, and other fun things of all kinds are of course welcome! If you wish to dye your armor in the traditional pride flag colours, that's also a fun way to express support!

A Guild Wars 2 player from Orlando, Florida, has suggested that those who wish to show support to the brothers and sisters we have lost in Pulse earlier this week can dye their armour in purple and gold - Orlando's soccer team colours.

Who can I contact about this?

If you would like to help organize this event, please let me know by contacting me in-game, on the forums, or by replying to this thread!

Please be aware that we are marching in the name of unity and acceptance. Any attacks on specific minorities, ethnic groups, religions, are not welcome at this event. This is also not a platform for political or religious debate. There are plenty of other places and times that are appropriate to start conversations regarding politics, policies, or religion.

  5. I've been roleplaying since I was a little itty bitty chld - I just didn't know I was doing it. I would take my friends in 2nd grade (age 7-8) to the woods and we would essentially LARP different characters with storylines that we'd improvise as stuff happened. I always wanted to play other characters, and whenever I was playing video games (even strategy games or city builders) I would always play from a standpoint of "so what would these people do in this situation", sometimes even voicing dialogues between characters I made up that were making decisions :P.

When I got World of Warcraft I actually learned the term "Roleplaying". I always just thought everyone tiptoes the line between roleplaying & gameplay mechanics, and I was surprised by the amount of people who were not roleplaying - I had always assumed they were the minority, and that creating a background, personality, etc. for your character was commonplace. Luckily, the recommended server for me when I started playing was Darkmoon Faire [RP], so I was put in a roleplaying server before I had learned what that even meant, and eventually met people who guided my 14-year old self through the magical world of roleplay. I changed my character names from Silverspade to Syathin and Stormcloak to Lethys, joined a community called WoWGamer, founded an explorers & travellers guild called Wanderlust and a Night Elf civilian initiative called Shari'Adune, and the rest is history!

  6. Last update we talked about a huge overhaul of the Event Team for Guild Wars 2, and so far it has been a success! We've decided to expand on the successful formula, rounding out our selection of events. Clearing out the stagnant Black Desert area has also made room for some other game projects to push their way to the forefront!

    Guild Wars 2

As an addition to the update two weeks ago, we've expanded our event team with the RP Event Organizer team, rounding out the variety of events we provide in the community. We've also added the required structure to the Calendar, and added TeamSpeak tags and channels.

    New Event Team designation added:

    OpenCommunity Event Team

    • EHlu8mI.png Event Commander
    • 0ptODME.png Triple Trouble Commander (sU8ZEaL.png for Trainees)
    • (NEW!) 5dRGJo4.png RP Event Organizer
      • The RP Event Organizer team focuses on roleplaying events.
      • While the commanders usually don't spend a lot of time speaking on Teamspeak, they can make use of the Team tools to prepare events, and the RP channels to taxi members into the event, or coordinate with each other while holding the event in-game.

    Additional notes:

    • A new event category, "GW2 - Roleplaying Event", in lavender colours, has been added to the event calendar
    • A Roleplaying subforum has been added to the Guild Wars 2 section
    • Internal infrastructure has been updated to support the Event Team
    • Commander Signups have been updated, now users can apply for the RP Event Organizer team

    Other Games

With the release & popularity of Overwatch, we wanted to add a place for people to connect and play together. Also, Minecraft is happening.

    Channels added:

    • The Overwatch channel has been added to the Let's Game section of the TeamSpeak, with subchannels -  a Lobby for chatting and private rooms for playing with friends

    Minecraft:

    • We've been talking about Minecraft for a very long time already, but things are finally moving in the direction of OpenCommunity acquiring a dedicated Minecraft server for our community members!
    • A Minecraft-dedicated forum thread has been made to both inform everyone of our plans and evaluate interest.

    Miscellaneous

At the end of Spring, we'll be adjusting the values of the basic Supporter badges to make them more accessible, and introducing new medium- and high-tier badges for the next season. Thanks to everyone who donated to the community and supported us so far!

    Supporter Badges Phasing Out:

    • The Valiant and Heroic Supporter badges are being phased out with the end of Spring (June 20th)
    • The Donation Page will be updated with new badges & perks on the 21st of June

  7. Here's a list of some common RP-related misconceptions!

Do I have to walk everywhere now?

Nope! While it is true that when roleplaying, we usually walk (because people don't usually just run everywhere in life), but while we're out of character we run just like normal people. Also, if you meant waypoints - they're canon. So even if you were in-character full-time, you could use them. Although some roleplayers have different interpretations of how canon they are, but that's a whole other can(on) of worms.

Roleplaying is that thing where people pretend their characters have sex, right?

You're thinking of RP's awkward cousin - ERP. ERPers are usually people who are either goofing around or covering for the fact they're actually having cyber sex, and they're usually not interested in other storylines, and are not a part of the roleplaying community. Generally, most roleplaying plots revolve around life in Tyria, parties, plotting, drama, adventure, and the like. While it is inevitable that occasionally some people might feel a certain way for each other, usually roleplayers don't play those scenarios out, and if they do, they usually do it in private. Public ERPing is frowned upon in the roleplaying community and it's also just inappropriate. This is a PG-13 game, people!

Roleplayers are just a bunch of guys pretending to be girls.

Roleplaying isn't about deception or "pretending" to be someone, it's about creating a compelling character and a story. Players shouldn't feel the need to be gender-locked, and there are a lot of men out there who like the idea of playing a female character. There are just as many female players who roleplay male characters. It's like an improv play, or a film, or story. Think of it this way: every word that Arya Stark has ever said was written by George R R Martin. He is Arya. An author "plays" the character s/he writes. It's the same in roleplay.

There is, of course, a large amount of men who play female characters just to be naked with them, but they fall under the above category of ERPers, and generally aren't considered a part of the roleplaying community.

Do I have to talk all old-timey like?

Not really. Some roleplayers choose to, because it helps with their immersion and minimizes the amount of slip-ups by using modern words. But if you played any of the living story, you can hear that most of the new Destiny's Edge speak in quite modern lingo for the most part.

Do I have to know all the lore before I can try roleplaying?

Not at all! Just knowing the basics is fine, if there's anything you don't know about the world you can look it up on the spot, ask a player out-of-character (by whispering them), or better yet - make it so your character doesn't know it either! Characters don't know everything, and if your character is a peasant from a random hut in Queensdale, they don't have to know everything.

Roleplayers don't know how to PvE/PvP/WvW/play their class/play the game

    *5 minute fart noise*

Add your own if you've encountered some! Or share your experiences with the ones mentioned here :D

  8. May has come to an end, and we have concluded the Cybersmile fundraiser, sending 50% of all donations we've received between the 1st of April and the 31st of May to the Cybersmile Foundation - a non-profit organization focusing on cool stuff such as promoting a more positive, inclusive, and diverse space on the internet, as well as helping victims of cyberbullying and online abuse!

Together, we've raised 200€ for Cybersmile, and have sent over the donation this morning!

Cybersmile has been kind enough to provide a quick reference to see how much of a difference our donation will make. The donation can cover:

    • 73 instances of emergency support via the phone helpline
    • 11 50-minute counselling sessions for victims of cyberbullying
    • Training a Cybersmile volunteer to help others online

So all in all, we did something good, everyone ^^

Thanks to everyone who donated, every donation counts and helps promote a more positive space on the internet! Let's make sure that we continue being a beacon of positivity on the internet! Keep on shining, everyone!

  9. Hello! If you're reading this, you're likely interested in roleplaying, but don't know where to start. Here's some quick info courtesy of my WoW roleplaying to get you started, with terms adjusted for GW2!

    What is roleplaying?

In games, roleplaying (or "RP") means giving your character a name, personality and background of their own, and responding to things as your character would.

    Why roleplay?

Well, if you like acting, improvising, socializing or writing stories then you will probably find roleplaying very enjoyable. You'll also probably like it if you are interested in the backstory (or "lore") of Tyria.

    Are there roleplaying servers?

    No. *looks at Anet sternly*

But there are roleplaying guilds! Most of the time you can spot them quite easily as they usually go for the [RP] guild tag, regardless of their name.

How does roleplaying affect my experience

Most roleplayers usually do not roleplay full time, and do break immersion whenever playing alone or with non-roleplayers (i.e., most of the time). Some use specific characters for PvE/PvP and specific characters for RP. But, there are a few things roleplayers try to stick to all the time.

    •
    • Naming rules
Characters and pets need to have suitable roleplaying names. They cannot contain:
      • Partial/complete sentences (e.g. Ilikecheese or Lets Kill Kralk)
      • Real world references (McDonalds, iPods, etc.)
      • Nonsensical parts or phrases ("lol", "wtf", "X", etc.)
      • Anything that isn't a name (e.g. Deldrimor Ingot, Glints Other Egg)

      Common chat use
The /say chat is for roleplaying in. That means using other chats for out-of-character ("OOC") things. Generally, while roleplaying, try to avoid the following in say chat:
      • Smilies (such as xD or :P)
      • Abbreviations/leetspeak (such as 'lol' or 'noob')
      • Real life/the modern world (e.g. 'My cat just jumped on the keyboard!')
      • Game mechanics (such as levels, DPS, chat channels, etc.)

    Creating a character

Character creation varies from person to person. Some people plan everything about their characters at the start - they know their character's family, birthday and even favourite food before they've even logged in for the first time. Others only decide a couple of details at first, then log in and start roleplaying, developing the character as they go. It's up to you how detailed you want to be, but there are a few details every character needs:

    • Name
Your name is important - once you've chosen it, you're pretty much stuck with it unless you want to start all over again or pay for a name change. With an RP character, you also need to find a name that suits your race. If you're unfamiliar with the naming conventions of Tyria, they're quickly explained here. If you need more ideas, we would suggest looking at NPC names and trying to follow their pattern.
Whatever name you choose, don't just copy the name of a famous fictional character! It's not very imaginative.

      Personality
Try to pick some key traits for your character, both negative and positive. Is your character nosy, shy, flirtatious, greedy, generous? Is there a reason why they are the way they are?

      Backstory
Think about your character's age, birthplace, upbringing and experiences. This may be difficult if you are new to Tyrian lore, but you can find a nice, short outline of your race's past at character creation. Remember, your backstory is your creation and no one else's - no one can tell you what to put in it, including us! However, there are a couple of things experienced roleplayers will suggest avoiding - things such as
      • Avoid relations to known / epic characters in the game (e.g. Logan's child, Zojja's long lost brohter, Caithe's secret lover)
      • Avoid race-bending or shapeshifting (e.g. "half-charr, half-asura", "I use a human model but actually I'm a grawl", "poses as a Norn, is secretly a shapeshifting skelk"). The idea might be cool, but it will break immersion for most players.
      • Avoid demonic/vampiric possession - especially when it's lorebreaking.
      • Avoid personal story-related backgrounds. When it comes to the "Pact Commander" - i.e. the personal story we play as GW2 players, it's customary to speak of them as a legendary hero, and since all players have equal claim to the title, it's customary to avoid using it, otherwise there would be 5 million heroes who had slain Scarlet out there.
      • Don't worry if you mess up. Everyone's first roleplaying character was Logan's half-norn child who was secretly possessed by a demon. But we learn, improve, and retcon! :D

    Starting out

When you first create your new RP character, you may not know how to begin RPing. You can just start levelling if you want, and most people do, because starting zones are quiet. Once you've reached a busier area, like a city for example, try some of the following things to start roleplaying:

    • Walking instead of running. This sounds insignificant, but it gives off a signal that you're a roleplayer, so others know they can RP with you if they can find a reason to (most of us don't just strike up a conversation with any random person in the street, after all).
    • Emoting things, e.g. looking in your bag, or checking your mail. You can create custom emotes like this by typing /e into the chatlog. For example, if your character's called Malena and you type /e searches through her mailbox, it will appear in the chatlog as Malena searches through her mailbox.
    • Visiting a RP 'hotspot'. In general it's best to roleplay as much as possible wherever you go, rather than rely on one place to find RP - but if you're a beginner it's a good idea to find a gathering of roleplayers and see them in action. The Grove is one such spot. Another place to also start roleplaying is looking at the calendar on this website and looking for Roleplaying events. Most of these are open to the public, so you should be able to just hop in and join!
    • Finding friends to RP with. Since we don't have roleplaying servers, roleplay isn't everywhere, and because there are few in-game events attracting roleplayers, we're pretty scattered - sometimes you need to go looking for RP, or create it yourself and wait for people to join in. It's also nice to have a group of friends to roleplay with when the RP scene is quiet. You can make yourself known on the forums, join a good RP guild, or try the old map chat, although that might produce varying results.

    Things to avoid

You will become better at RP as you keep doing it, so don't worry too much about making mistakes, but we'll point out a couple of common ones you can try to avoid.

    • "Godmoding"
Taking control of someone's character, for example /e pushes Harry into the lake. It would be better to write /e tries to push Harry into the lake.
    • "Poweremoting"
Acting as if your character is invincible. We're all human(oid), and no character is immune to everything. If someone unexpectedly throws their drink in your direction, try being drenched and confused rather than just magically dodging the drink. If someone tries to throw you in the lake, you don't have to let them succeed but you should consider it. Roleplaying is about cooperation; let others win once in a while. This rule goes hand-in-hand with the rule above. Think of roleplaying like improv, and you can find it's way more fun to roll with someone else's idea than going with what you originally planned.
    • "Metagaming"
Acting like your character knows everything you know. For example, you may be able to see on a stranger's tooltip that they are a thief. But if you approach him saying 'Hey, thief!' you're metagaming. Your character probably wouldn't know the stranger was a thief, after all. Another example is letting your character know too much lore; everything experienced by the "Pact Commander" isn't common knowledge, for example, and most regular inhabitants of Tyria aren't aware of everything players are. Use your judgement when deciding how much your character knows. :)

    Other advice
    • Not everyone roleplays
Most people running around Tyria aren't interested in RP. A lot of them don't even know what RP is! You'll see a lot of people breaking the "rules" we described above, because there are no roleplaying servers (*cough*).

However, if someone is roleplaying, just be considerate and don't jump around like crazy between them and the person they are talking to, and treat everyone with respect.

      Maybe avoid The Busted Flagon
For some reason, the place is crazy. It's full of ERP, OOC, and people doing the most ridiculous, unrealistic, over-the-top RP you will ever see. Sylvari prostitutes, asura pretending to be the children of humans, people claiming to be Trahearne's daughter... It may have its good days, but overall, it's the worst place to learn anything about roleplaying.

      RP-related abbreviations/phrases
      RP Roleplaying
      IC In character
      OOC Out of character
      RPer Roleplayer

Lore The backstory of the world you're roleplaying in

Godmoding Taking control of someone else's character without their permission
Power-emoting Trying to make your character flawless and invincible
Metagaming Treating OOC info as IC info
