  1. Year 1036-1088: Duke Teodor Lanik II

    pwADCJn.gif

Image: Teodor's profile through the years.

Teodor II was undoubtedly the most ambitious and powerful ruler of the Lanik dynasty to date. He kept a watchful eye on neighbouring rulers and his own liege, Queen Ermengard of Bavaria, and used their moments of weakness to increase his own influence. Rather than conquering territories, he focused on making entire realms his tributaries, increasing his influence well past the borders of his family’s realm.

After forging an alliance with the Empire of Francia and making the King of Lombardy his tributary, he petitioned the Queen of Bavaria for independence. She refused, and thus Carinthia’s war for independence began. Using the wealth and armies of Lombardy and backed by the forces of Francia, Teodor won the war 3 years later, becoming an independent Duke.

Teodor kept an iron grip on his tributaries, and at his peak, he held the Duchy of Bosnia, Kingdoms of Lombardy and Bavaria, and the Empire of Francia as his tributaries, securing his independence and becoming the most powerful ruler in Europe. He also forged a massive alliance spanning almost the entirety of Europe, including the Kingdoms of Svea Rike (Sweden) and Saxony. With this alliance, he took up arms against the Byzantine Empire and claimed the duchy of Dalmatia.

He had eight comital level vassals, the Counties of Innsbruck, Tirol, Chur, Grisons, Zadar, Split and Verona, and the Grand City of St. Gallen.

His reign marks the independence of greater Carinthia and house Lanik.

Image: A timelapse of Teodor's lands and influence. War for independence not pictured, as wars are not highlighted, but takes place between 1046 and 1049.

Note: Francia is labeled with "Carinthia" as the screenshot was taken in 1088, when Francia was a tributary of Carinthia. Tributaries act almost as loose vassals - paying taxes and having to join wars when called upon, so in-game they keep their borders while taking the name of their suzerain.

    He had 8 children:

    1. 12.7.1050, Teodor [heir]
    2. 12.5.1052, Natalija
    3. 12.8.1058, Petra
    4. 12.8.1063, Tatjana
    5. 12.4.1069, Castimir
    6. 5.6.1072, Vid [legitimized]
    7. 11.12.1073, Filip [legitimized]
    8. 7.11.1076, Sonja [illegitimate]

His full title at the time of his death was:

Duke Teodor II ‘the Lawgiver’ of Carinthia, Croatia, Tyrol, Venice, Friuli and Dalmatia, Count of Krain, Steiermark, Istria, Kärnten, Aquileia, Zachlumia, Senj, Veglia, Treviso, Mantua and Venezia. Suzerain of Bosnia, Bavaria, Lombardy and Francia.

  2. Hey everyone ^^

So, I'm posting the full clue from the Scavenger Hunt we did on Sunday on here for everyone to solve in case they might've missed it when we held it on Sunday!

Because the people who were there had to work through various in-game puzzles / tasks to get small parts of the clue, they had a bit of a headstart but now the clue is available to all!

For those wanting prizes, the deadline is this Sunday (May 14th)! But you can continue to solve it afterwards ^^

When you have the solution, please PM me on the forums or message me in-game (Lelling.6795) :D Don't post the answer publicly yet as others might want to solve it!

    Here's the clue:

    Scavenger Hunt.png

And here is a colorblind version to help those who might have trouble seeing some of the color nuances in the image.

What you're looking for is a message that needs to be decoded from the puzzle :D The message is not necessarily a full sentence, but it should make at least some degree of sense to anybody reading it (i.e. it's not random gibberish) :D

Also here's the New Krytan Alphabet to help you decode the symbols ^^

    New-Krytan.jpg

    Good luck!

  3. Year 999-1036: Duke Castimir Lanik

    ndIvzdN.gif

Image: Castimir's profile through the years.

Castimir continued in the footsteps of his ancestors, expanding and reinforcing his family’s territory to include Zadar and Venezia, adding the Duchy of Venice to his family’s holdings with the latter. He also delegated the ruling of the northernmost parts of his family’s lands to various vassals, shifting his reliance on vassals rather than purely rely on direct rule over his demesne.

He also followed his father's example in making a tributary out of the nearby Duchy of Bosnia, extending his power (and coffers).

His wife was Chlotsuintha Teduericingi, the Duchess of Friuli, a Duchess in the Kingdom of Lombardy. He often helped her fight off threats, and she assisted him in wars as well.

At the height of his power, he also allied with the Empire of Francia, which allowed him to declare a war on the destabilised Byzantine Empire to conquer the County of Diadora in 1027, claiming it in 1030 and restoring it its Croatian name, Zadar.

He invested heavily into the construction of cities and castles in the realm, founding Concordia, Cilli, Nin, Caplijna and Novigrad, and granting them to various relatives.

    sgUeCuZ.gif

Image: A timelapse of Castimir's lands. His realm is marked in green, vassals in teal, and tributaries in yellow.

    He had 10 children:

    1. 13.8.1005, Katja [heir presumptive until 13.10.1010, Teodor's birth]
    2. 5.1.1009, Petra [illegitimate]
    3. 2.3.1009, Timotej [illegitimate]
    4. 13.10.1010, Mojca
    5. 13.10.1010, Teodor [heir]
    6. 13.12.1012, Kresimir
    7. 2.3.1015, Grgur [illegitimate]
    8. 13.7.1016, Filip
    9. 7.9.1023, Martina
    10. 1.10.1035, Nina [illegitimate]

    0clzBa3.png

Image: Family tree showing Castimir's children and siblings.

The end of Castimir's reign was also a unique circumstance, as he was the only member of the Lanik family to abdicate from his position. At age 53, he decided it was time to pass on the rule to his son Teodor, who became Duke Teodor II.

His full title at the time of his abdication was:

Duke Castimir of Carinthia, Croatia, Tyrol and Venice, Count of Krain, Steiermark, Istria, Kärnten, Aquileia, Zachlumia, Zengg, Vegl, Zadar and Venezia, Baron of Görz, founder of Concordia, Cilli, Nin, Caplijna and Novigrad. Steward of Bavaria, Suzerain of Bosnia, Duke-Consort of Friuli.

    He ruled for 37 years.

    That looks quite snazzy indeed!

Who are the people on the mug? :D

    Edit: Also, Minecraft? Where?!

The mug features the OC Staff at the time it was designed, - Slay, Sabina, Sithicus and myself + Atila who designed the icons :D We were hoping to fit more on but everything looked way too squished :P

If we ever do any future versions of the mug I'm tempted to get bigger mugs just so we can put on more faces :D

  5. We've released our third and final birthday announcement!

We're pleased to complete our current supporter set with the final rank - Ascendant Supporter! It features unique rewards, including physical items! We've also added extra supporter titles for our public Discord and Minecraft, so those who support our community can showcase their shinies there too!

Check out the announcement thread for the full info:

  6. I'd like to add a personal note to this too -

I'm so happy that we were able to add this rank. I really wanted to be able to send people something, but as a somewhat global community, we've always been scared of high shipping fees, which is why it took us a bit longer to determine the rank's donation threshold. I'm definitely going to keep an eye on whether we could possibly manage to include physical items in future sets at even smaller thresholds - so consider the Ascendant Supporter items somewhat of an experiment in that regard. I'm also really pleased with the items themselves - I've been looking for months for some kind of physical knickknack that would be cool for people to use - I've browsed through everything from keychains, fridge magnets, mouse mats, to calendars, collectable cards and even 3D printed figurines, but I think a classic good old mug & pin is a really great thing, and I'm really pleased with how they turned out.

Here's another pic of the shinies I took with my phone:

    wwvgjf1.png

Overall, I'm quite excited to be able to give back something physical to our members to show off to their friends & family :D

  7. Hey everyone,

it's time for our final community birthday announcement!

We are proud to announce that Ascendant Supporter, the highest supporter tier in our current supporter reward set, has become available!

    SupporterC5Ascendant.gif

    AscendantSupporterStrip.png

In addition to the forum & Teamspeak badges that have already been revealed before, the Ascendant Supporter pack also includes, for the first time in OpenCommunity's history, three physical items!

    • OpenCommunity heat mug, featuring artwork by our very own @Atila
    • Ascendant Supporter pin-back button
    • And an extra OpenCommunity logo pin-back button

    Mug1S.pngMug2S.pngMug3S.png

Here's a (very large) gif of the heat mug in action

As our highest supporter tier in this set, the Ascendant Supporter rank will be set to the 120€ threshold.

Note that in order to send the physical items, a mailing address will be required once a member hits the Ascendant Supporter rank. Members can opt out of the physical items if they don't wish to give out their address.

In addition, we're also happy to announce that our public Discord server as well as our brand new Minecraft server will now also include Supporter titles!

    • Supporter
      • Obtained with any donation towards the community or a sponsored cause.
    • Grand Supporter
      • Obtained at the 120€ threshold (Ascendant Supporter in the current set).

Note that all existing supporters in the current set will receive these extra titles retroactively.

The Discord/Minecraft titles are permanently available and will not swap out with sets, so they will be obtainable within any set. We will endeavor to create similar titles in other games we might possibly wade into in the future :D!

We are super excited for the completion of our supporter set, and hope that our generous supporters enjoy the addition!

  8. We've recently announced our second big announcement of the three we promised - the OpenCommunity Minecraft server! Huzzah! The server will be open on Sunday the 14th, after the Community Week is over! We will have a two-day resting period after the community week when no events will be scheduled, so it'll be a perfect time to just relax and bumble around the Minecraft server :D

Check out the announcement thread for more info!

  9. It's been 84 years...

    Hi everyone,

Our 2nd grand announcement before the Community Weekend is that OpenCommunity is opening our very own Minecraft server! Yaaay!

We'll be opening it up to everyone on Sunday, May 14th, after the Community Week!

    What's the game type?

We decided to go with a small survival server to start with and see how that goes :D We are definitely open to also starting up a creative world later on, but survival can often be more engaging as there is at least a small element of effort required in order to explore, build, and survive!

Are there going to be any mods?

We're starting out with a minimally modded server, or possibly even completely vanilla, and will be looking at possible ways to enrich everyone's experience by adding more later. However, mob griefing will be turned off, which means that those pesky creepers wont be able to damage players' constructions.

Tell us your suggestions for mods you'd like to see by replying to this thread! :D

    How do I join?

    Address: minecraft.theopencommunity.org:25569

    New Address: minecraft.theopencommunity.org

Do note that we are using a whitelist in order to ensure everyone can have a fun time in the game! Getting access to the server is easy - simply use the Minecraft whitelist form (you must be logged in on the forums in order to access it), enter your Minecraft username, and you'll be whitelisted as soon as we get to it :D. You can already submit the whitelist request in order to be able to jump right in once we unveil the address and open the server!

    Community Member icon!

We have also added a brand new Community Member icon for those who wish to rep their Minecraft loyalty :D Anyone whitelisted on the server can get it by just asking a Moderator, Community Manager or Admin! Do note that only one Community Member tag can be active at a time.

    OCMCF.png Community Member - Minecraft

    New Moderator!

We're also super happy to say that one of our long-standing GW2 Team members has joined the OC Moderator ranks in order to specifically focus on making sure everything in Minecraft is going smoothly - @Saipuff!

    Huzzah!

If you have any questions, queries, comments or complaints, let us know below or contact us via the Feedback Form!

We are really looking forward to starting this next step on OC's journey!

  10. Hey everyone! I am pleased to announce that OpenCommunity is once again joining hands with GamersGivingBack as one of the two official European organizers for MS Toga Party on May 13th!

    Official MS Toga Website
    LtkgvaB.png

    OpenCommunity EU pre-events
    14:00 - Triple Trouble
    15:00 - Hide & Seek
    17:00 - Relay Race
18:00 - Relaxed Activities Before the Party!
    MS Toga Party!
    18:45 - Tune in to GW-EN Radio!
    19:00 - Official kickoff!
    Times are in CEST

What is the MS Toga Party?

MS Toga Party is an event aimed at raising awareness and funds for multiple sclerosis research! It started in Guild Wars 1 in 2009, similar to Pink Day in LA. With each passing year, Gamers Giving Back has been pushing the Toga Party to new heights by involving more and more people and activities while raising donations to help find a cure for multiple sclerosis!

The event will be hosted on both NA and EU by several different organizers, and connected through GW-EN Radio! The event will take place in the evening of May 13th, starting at 6 PM CEST (that's 11 AM Central Time for US peeps).

There will be different events that players can participate and win prizes in, including legendaries and gem store prizes!

    How do I join?

You can join us by connecting to our Teamspeak3: ts.theopencommunity.org.

Alternatively, if you don't wish to use Teamspeak, you can join us in-game by keeping an eye out on the LFG on the day or contacting our commanders, or tune in to GW-EN radio on the day for information on how to join!

How do I join the OpenCommunity pre-events?

Simply hop onto our TS at ts.theopencommunity.org at any time and you'll see us in the MS Toga Party channel on the TeamSpeak! (For Triple Trouble, we'll be in the Triple Trouble Channel since it's a bigger event that needs subchannels).

The teamspeak & channels are not passworded and are open to all, and we don't have speaking requirements for users - but coordination is done via voice so it's recommended that you are there, even if you don't intend to speak! :D

    Where can I donate?

You can donate through the official donation page. Anyone who makes a donation and is also registered on our forums can, in addition to the rewards given out by Gamers Giving Back, also redeem the MS Toga Party 2017 supporter ribbon which will appear under your username on the forums:

    Special-MSToga2017_d.gif

In addition, as a featured cause, any donations made to the MS Toga Party will also progress your personal reward progress at OpenCommunity. Check out our donation page to see how to confirm your MS Toga Party donation with us.

    Where do the donations go?

The donations go to the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada, and the focus is primarily on care and research - this is very important as we currently do not have a cure for MS. That is why it's important to fund charities which focus on research, such as the MS Society of Canada. Whenever donating - to any charity - make sure that you do have access to information about where the money goes and what it's being used on.

Where can I stay tuned for more info?

    • For more MS Toga news and other charity events organized by Gamers Giving Back, follow @GamerGivingBack on Twitter
    • For news about our local organization of MS Toga Party, follow OpenCommunity on Twitter, Facebook and Tumblr, or join us on Discord

Event information will also be shared by our commanders and event organizers after each event, so keep an ear out after events. You can also follow this thread for any future updates, or keep an eye on our Discord announcements!

I can't donate, can I help out in other ways?

Yes! Here's a number of ways you can help!

    • Spread the word! Tell your guildies, friends, family and pets! Get everyone involved!
    • Follow & retweet the official Gamers Giving Back twitter and use the hashtags #toga17 #endms
    • Show your support in the MS Toga post on the official GW2 Forums!

  11. I'd also like to extend a huge thank you to @Tubi and @AmarielSilme for completely self-organizing the previous "unofficial" training raids, which they generously opened to all members of the community and beyond! They really filled in the time that allowed us to develop the Raid Team functionality on the website & set up the foundations while learning from their experiences!

Thanks so much to both of you and everyone else involved in the coordination of the training Raids! :happysylvaritest:
