  1. As we grow as a community, we wanted to create different points of access & avenues of communication between the community & players around the world! In addition to adding an array of social media connections, we've also streamlined our donation system to be more user-friendly.

    Community

In the information age, everyone's trying to be as connected as possible to the rest of the world, with various social media websites dominating the webosphere. To make it easier to get in contact with both our community members as well as players who don't know we exist yet, we're adding a couple more social media websites to our contact list!

    Discord

    • We are proud to announce the OpenCommunity public Discord server! It's been in its testing phase for a while now but we're confident that we didn't break anything! If you're not familiar with Discord - it's a free communications app which can run in browser, as an app on your PC or on your phone! It's a nice way to stay in touch out of game while not compromising privacy or security, as well as stay in touch with all the community news. We're looking to integrate discord into our community on whatever level feels natural.
    • Click here to read the full post regarding our Discord server, where you can also find info on how to join!

    Social Media

We're also adding the basic array of social media websites. In addition to our Steam Group and Facebook Group, you can also follow us on our

    Donations

We wanted to create a friendlier donation system, one which allows users to build up their donations towards shiny prizes over time, rather than having to "purchase" specific badges. These changes retroactively take into account previous donations made by members, who have already been notified of their progress towards the next badge via forum mail.

    • Donations now add up to unlock further rewards rather than those rewards having to be obtained with a single donation.
    • New badges have been added
      • Lucent Supporter
      • Radiant Supporter
      • Ascendant Supporter
    • These new badges will remain available far longer than the 3-month run our previous badge sets included.
    • The donation thresholds for Supporter and Shiny Supporter badges have been updated.
    • Click here to read more about the new Donation system.

    Forums

We're continuing to improve our array of subforums and forum features. We'll continue to keep an eye on the forums and see what's needed and what isn't.

    New Forums

Minecraft is happening. We promise. Soon™. Also GW 2 raids.

    • A Minecraft forum has been created in our Community Center for all our (future) Minecraft needs.
    • The Lion's Arch Aerodrome forum has been created in the Guild Wars 2 section of the forum for all our raiding needs.

    Theme Updated

    • An update for our forum theme has been rolled out. Most of these were background upgrades and bug fixes, but some parts of the forums will look slightly different. Please report any issues by replying to this thread or contacting any admin (@Slaywright is our master of themes).
    • This update should fix a number of issues related to the theme.

    Guild Wars 2

Since the team redesign, our GW2 community has been growing strong, and we've been adding quite a few new events to our schedule. Make sure to check the calendar and see what's being added!

    Community Weekend

    • The Summer Community Weekend has been scheduled on the 23rd and 24th of July
    • All regular events have been unscheduled for the 23rd and 24th, as the Community Weekend takes place at the same time
    • A Community Weekend channel has been created on TeamSpeak

Living World Season 3 - Commander Break

After the community weekend, Season 3 is going to hit and our commanders are going to be using it for a short three-day vacation from events in order to allow our commanders to focus on Season 3 content. We've noticed event attendance is usually low for the first few days after a content patch anyway and we don't want to put extra stress on our commanders as well as allow everyone to enjoy new content together.

    • All regular events have been unscheduled for Tuesday-Thursday (26th, 27th & 28th of July) to allow our commanders to focus on Season 3.
    • A Season 3 Hype channel has been created on the TeamSpeak for players to socialize in. As new content is introduced, we'll create additional channels if necessary.

  2. Due to popular demand, and also just because it's about time, OpenCommunity is finally launching our Discord server! We will mainly just be using it for text communication as we have TeamSpeak for voice, but it's a great way of keeping in touch with everyone out of game.

    BASIC QUESTIONS

    What is Discord?

Discord is a free communications app which can be installed on your phone, PC, or from a web browser, making it versatile and super easy to access. It supports text as well as voice communication, which is why it's become very popular with guilds and other communities.

Is Discord going to replace TeamSpeak in our community?

No. Discord's voice capabilities & features cannot compare well to TeamSpeak, and large-scale events would make for a very loud & rowdy channel. TeamSpeak seems to also be more recognizable amongst players. At least for the purposes of public events in Guild Wars 2 - which is our primary use for TeamSpeak right now, we see TS continuing to be a staple.

The OpenCommunity event organization team and staff have been using Discord for a while, as it's a really nice way to communicate out of game without sharing personal information (Skype, Facebook, whatsapp, etc. all require some kind of personal info).

What kind of stuff are we going to have on the Discord?

Lots of stuff! The Discord has channels for chatting about pretty much anything, as well as event notification channels and announcements from the staff, so you'll be able to keep track of stuff that's happening inside the community!

Do I need to download anything?

Nope, Discord can be run from your browser with full functionality except for the push-to-talk feature, but since we wont be using voice chat on Discord much it doesn't matter anyway :P

    Great! How do I join?

    Simply click this link!

In order to ensure the safety of our members and prevent spambots from taking over our server, members need to be verified - all you need to do is reply to this thread.

    MORE INFO

What kind of channels do we have?

We have a number of channels, let's dive right in and go through them!

When you first connect you will only be able to see the Welcome Room, which contains the rules of our Discord & information on how to verify your identity in order to get access to the rest of our Discord server.

Once verified, you'll be able to see a number of rooms:

    • Announcements
      • The announcements chat will be used by the staff to post updates & announcements pertaining to the community. Keep an eye on that one, as we do occasionally say important stuff!
    • Event Notifications
      • The event-notifications chat will be used by our various teams of event organizers to remind / notify members of upcoming events! As right now most of our events are GW2-based, we only need one such channel. In the future, we'll separate our event notification channels by game, so people can unfollow channels of the games they're not interested in.
    • Forum Thread Links
      • Whenever you post something on the forums, feel free to post it in there & briefly say what the thread is about! That way, people will be able to quickly see if any new threads have appeared that they're interested in, and it's a nice way of making sure more people see that thread you've posted!
    • General Chat
    • Minecraft Chat
    • Pokémon Chat
    • Guild Wars 2 Chat
    • Guild Wars 2 Spoilers
      • For discussing GW2 story updates and future release spoilers
    • Overwatch Chat
      • The "chat" channels are intended for random banter of all sorts! Based on experience, it seems to be that:
        • General chat is for cat pictures
        • Pokémon chat is for complaining we don't have Pokémon Go! in our respective countries
        • Guild Wars 2 chat is for screaming "AAA THE NEXT EXPANSION IS COMING!"
      • Essentially, feel free to talk about anything & everything in those channels :D

    ~

If you have any questions related to anything at all, feel free to respond to this topic or message on of our moderators or admins!

  3. Oh dear :D I studied Japanese for like 5 whole minutes and this is what happens!

Also, I've been wanting to play Europa Universalis for AGES but I want it to be an imported game from CK2 and I never seem to finish one :D So I'm just waiting to finish my current run which is already well into the 1300s so I'll get to play EUIV for the first time ever!

  4. Hey folks!

Due to popular demand, we've created the raid subforum! A few tips for what to post here:

    • Discuss raids!
      • Discuss raids - raid tactics, mechanics, etc.
    • Advertise your raid group!
      • Have a raid group or trying to build one? Let everyone know!
    • Look for a raid group!
      • Post your stats & specs and let everyone know you're looking for a raid group!

Pretty much anything pertaining to raids is fair game! Get raiding!

  5. Hey folks!

The community weekend is fast approaching, so let's dive right into what's going to be happening at this year's event!

    H7r5WT1.png

So what is the Community Weekend?

The Community Weekend celebration is a two-day event packed extravaganza of crazy, fun events, challenges, competitions, and some good old fashioned world boss slaying! All regularly scheduled events are off for the two days, and are instead replaced with Scavenger Hunts, Hide & Seek, Fashion Wars, and more!

    When/where does it happen?

The event happens on the 23rd and 24th of July, Saturday & Sunday! We start at 13:00 CEST with the classic Triple Trouble, and continue from there! You can join us at any time during the day, hop onto our TeamSpeak (ts.theopencommunity.org) and join in with the fun! The even is held on our TeamSpeak, with individual events sometimes being led in-game in Guild Wars 2, or out of game.

What kind of events are there? Are there any requirements to join? Will there be prizes?

There are all kinds of events happening (see full schedule below). We do our best to serve a mixed bag of all sorts of events, so that everyone gets to participate in something fun! We plan out the events so that they require minimal amounts of world exploration, setting locations in Lion's Arch or racial capitals, or areas adjacent to those! Coming on a level 80 character is recommended, but for most events it is not required! And yes! There will be prizes! Lots and lots of shiny prizes!

Additionally, we have Challengenauts, which is an Awesomenauts event outside of Guild Wars 2!

Are there any forum-based events as well?

Yes! We are going to hold a screenshot competition throughout the entire weekend! Best screenshot taken at any of the weekend events wins! Before the events start, we'll open a thread where people can share their screenshots! The contest will close at the end of the month, a week after the Community Weekend, so that everyone has time to go through their screenshots and find the best one! Soon after, the winner will be announced!

    So what's the event schedule?

I want to know more about the individual events!

    Here you go:

    Saturday

    Triple Trouble - 14:00 CEST [12:00 UTC/Server time]

Triple Trouble is the most difficult event in the game (bar the shiny new raids), and it's also one of the most fun ones! Join us in defeating the legendary Three-headed Wurm for fun, loot, and shinies! Tactics for the event will be explained for anyone who is new to it!

    Level requirement: 56 (80 recommended)
    Location: Bloodtide Coast

    Hide and Seek - 15:15 CEST [13:15 UTC/Server time]

Hide and Seek is what it says on the tin. Commanders will hide in one of Tyria's maps, and it's up to everyone else to find them! Each commander also gives out a shiny when found. Commanders will always be in accessible locations (no gliding, no map breaking, no items or teleportation), and will give out hints when enough time has elapsed so the game is always fair and fun!

    Level requirement: N/A
    Location: Secret

    Belcher's Bluff Contest - 17:00 CEST [15:00 UTC/Server time]

Belcher's Bluff is a Guild Wars 2 minigame of bluffing, drinking, and - you guessed it - belching! Players compete in pairs of 1v1 until we crown a champion, who gets a prize!

    Level requirement: N/A
    Location: Lion's Arch

    Protect the Quaggans! - 18:00 CEST [16:00 UTC/Server time]

Those pesky quaggans just can't hold still! Players group themselves into teams (size and number of teams depending on amount of participants), and have to protect their designated player-quaggans from peril as the largely unaware critters run around and get in all sorts of trouble!

    Level requirement: 80 recommended
    Location: Secret

    Challengenauts - 18:00 CEST [16:00 UTC/Server time]

Sometimes people like a little bit of a break from Guild Wars! Join Wafflemancer in in the fun little game Awesomenauts and participate in the crazy fun! More info & RSVP on the Calendar entry for the event!

    Tonic Race - 19:30 CEST [17:30 UTC/Server time]

Don your favorite costume, tonic or transformation, and let's race! Win fabulous prizes and have fun in a crazy race of quaggans, snowballs, and other assorted transformations!

    Level requirement: N/A
    Location: Secret

    Naked Tequatl - 20:45 CEST [18:45 UTC/Server time]

Zhatian's champion isn't actually that scary - to the point where we can defeat it without even wearing any armor!

    Level requirement: 66 (80 recommended)
    Location: Sparkfly Fen

    Tipsy Triple Trouble - 21:20 CEST [19:20 UTC/Server time]

    Level requirement: 56 (80 recommended)
    Location: Bloodtide Coast

We like to think every Triple Trouble event we do is fun - but this one contains a built-in drinking game for the commanders! They'll receive a few commonly used words they're not allowed to say, and that's all you need to get three people really smashed! Anyone who wishes to join in with the commanders can do so if they are of legal drinking age, but remember to drink responsibly! The majority of participants who join us on Tipsy Triple Trouble usually don't drink and have a good time just as well! And despite the distractions, our main focus is still getting the event done - and so far we've always pulled it off!

    Afterparty! - After Triple Trouble

After the scheduled events are over, the sky is the limit. Anything can happen during the afterparty, but if history is any indication, this is the time for tipsy karaoke, massive quaggan trains moving accross Tyria, Asuraball, and more! Brace yourself, for the night is young, and there's a whole new day of events the next day as well!

    Sunday

    Triple Trouble - 14:00 CEST [12:00 UTC/Server time]

Triple Trouble is the most difficult event in the game (bar the shiny new raids), and it's also one of the most fun ones! Join us in defeating the legendary Three-headed Wurm for fun, loot, and shinies!

    Level requirement: 56 (80 recommended)
    Location: Bloodtide Coast

    Jumping Puzzle Race - 15:15 CEST [13:15 UTC/Server time]

We love jumping puzzles, they're a GW2 staple and it's always fun bumbling about and finding your way! We'll be jumping around lower-level or easily accessible areas so it's the fairest and most accessible for everyone!

    Level requirement: N/A
    Location: Secret

    Scavenger Hunt - 16:00 CEST [14:00 UTC/Server time]

Start off with a single clue, work through riddles, puzzles, hints and rhymes to hunt down more clues to advance in the Scavenger hunt and win a fabulous prize!

    Level requirement: N/A
    Location: Secret

    Improv Challenge - 18:00 CEST [16:00 UTC/Server time]

Groups compete against each other by having to create a short scene based on a theme given to us on the spot by the public! Come one, come all, join us in Lion's Arch and let's see what kind of hilarity ensues!

    Level requirement: N/A
Location: Lion's Arch or racial capital

    Fashion Wars - 19:00 CEST [17:00 UTC/Server time]

Who will be Tyria's next Top Model? Prepare your finest couture and dazzle both the audience and the judges! Whether it's the fiercest or the funniest look, bring your best and show everyone the best of what you've got!

    Level requirement: N/A
Location: Lion's Arch or racial capital

    Naked Shatterer - 20:45 CEST [18:45 UTC/Server time]

    We've defeated Zhaitan's champion - now it's time for Kralkatorrik's champion!

    Level requirement: 66 (80 recommended)
    Location: Blazeridge Steppes

    Tipsy Triple Trouble (pt.2) - 21:20 CEST [19:20 UTC/Server time]

We like to think every Triple Trouble event we do is fun - but this one contains a built-in drinking game for the commanders! They'll receive a few commonly used words they're not allowed to say, and that's all you need to get three people really smashed! Anyone who wishes to join in with the commanders can do so if they are of legal drinking age, but remember to drink responsibly! The majority of participants who join us on Tipsy Triple Trouble usually don't drink and have a good time just as well! And despite the distractions, our main focus is still getting the event done - and so far we've always pulled it off!

    Level requirement: 56 (80 recommended)
    Location: Bloodtide Coast

    Afterparty! - After Triple Trouble

After the scheduled events are over, the sky is the limit. Anything can happen during the afterparty, but if history is any indication, this is the time for tipsy karaoke, massive quaggan trains moving accross Tyria, Cards against OpenCommunity, and more! We'll send off our weekend of celebrations with a bang!

Let's now officially start the OpenCommunity April Community Weekend HYPE!!!!

  6. Hey folks!

I wanted to talk a little bit about our (new) donation system to cover the basics!

So, before going into our current set, let's talk a little bit about how we got here. Previously, we had two three-month fundraisers for the community, one started on Indiegogo to kickstart our community and one done on our paypal. During the fundraisers, we gave out specific badges for large donations, and in between them, we didn't really have anything. The problem with that is that people can only donate & get rewards during certain times, and we also had some people asking us to prolong the fundraiser as they wanted a specific badge but couldn't afford the donation at the time.

We wanted to switch to something constant that allows people to donate any amount at their own pace, which also enables them to compound smaller donations over time. This allows us to not only reward people who put forward large donations, but also long-term loyal contributors. Because every Euro counts, this also means no donation goes unrewarded.

    So how does it work?

For the time being, our donations still go through paypal, not through our forums. When making a donation, you are asked to provide your forum username, and that is the identifier we use to keep track of your donation. All your donations add up towards unlocking the next tier of supporter rewards. When your donation is made, you'll receive a private message on the forums informing you of your progress towards the next supporter tier, as well as any rewards that you might have unlocked.

Do any of my donations made prior to this count towards my reward progress?

Any donations that were used to unlock unique badges (Champion, Legendary, Valiant and Heroic Supporter) will not carry through, as they have already been "used up" to unlock those badges. But anything below or above those exact amounts will carry through. Here are three examples:

    • A) During the Indiegogo campaign, Christine donated 75€. The Champion Supporter badge was awarded for 50€, so her current progress in this set is 25€.
    • B) During the Spring campaign, James donated 20€, granting him the Shiny Supporter badge. Since the Shiny Supporter badge is not unique and is still a part of this set, James' progress is 20€.
    • C) Janice donated 7€ during the Indiegogo Campaign and 8€ during the Spring Campaign. Originally, this would've not given her any badges, but under the new system, she is now at 15€ progress, which awards her the Shiny Supporter rank.

Everyone who has had their donations carried over to the new system have been messaged on the forums. If you believe yours should have carried through, but didn't, let us know!

I made my donation before registering on the forums, can it still count towards the progress?

Yes. All donations have been recorded and those which are not attributed to a forum name are still associated with an email address, which can be used to verify your identity. Message @Lelling on the forums, we'll work together to have your progress counted quickly and help you claim your rewards.

What are the new supporter ranks?

Here is the list of the current supporter ranks. To see full information regarding the rewards unlocked each tier, check out our donation page.

    • Supporter-Cropped.png- any donation
    • Shiny-Supporter-Update.png - 15€
    • Lucent-Supporter-2.png - 30€
    • Radiant-Supporter-Final-Glow.gif- 70€

How soon are these badges going to change?

The pace of the 3-month fundraisers was intended as a flash/emergency/fundraising campaign to properly kickstart our community. Now that we are up and running, this is not required, so the current set will stay for much longer, so there is no rush. When the set change will occur it will be announced well in advance, but for the foreseeable future there are no plans to change it just yet.

Will you be doing charity / non-profit fundraisers in the future?

Yes! We will continue to do our best to highlight and raise money for different causes. Any donations made towards a featured cause will count towards reward progress just as if the donation was sent to us. Keep an eye out for featured causes in the near future!

When Minecraft launches, will there be a supporter rank for it?

We are planning to implement shinies for supporters in Minecraft (or any other game that might be in our future, for that matter), and any such rewards will be retroactively applied to all supporters of the same tier!

  10. War for the Overworld!

    header.jpg?t=1466708363

This game is SO good and so massively under-appreciated!

If you loved Dungeon Keeper (2), you will love this game. Gameplay-wise, it is essentially Dungeon Keeper 3 :P

For those unfamiliar with DK2 - War for the Overworld is a god game RTS, where you play the bad guy!

The campaign is really nice and diverse, and makes for around 50 or so gameplay hours, it also has a nice sandbox dungeon builder AND multiplayer support. This is definitely a fun game worth the puchase!

Check it out on Steam, where you can get it for 28€ when there isn't a sale on.
